Stipes Report
THE STARTER REPORTED: a) BETHEL (A Fortune) was nervous and stood awkwardly in the stalls. b) BEECHAMWOOD BOY (R Fourie) jumped awkwardly and was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) CROWNED HORNBILL (M van Rensburg) was buffeted between RESURGENCE (X Ndlovu) and SWISS WALT (S Veale) shortly after the start. b) MUNCHKIN (C Zackey), which was hanging in from the 300m, shifted in sharply at approximately the 150m and had to steady for a number of strides off the heels of BONJOUR LA VILLE (*B Plaatjies) at the 100m. The Board, when considering this incident, took into account that BONJOUR LA VILLE was hanging in, the cross wind was gusting and Apprentice B Plaatjies was unable to fully assist his mount from the 200m. As a consequence, the Board did not sanction any Rider with regard to this incident. c) In view of the performance of BETHEL (A Fortune), which was not persevered with from the 500m, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. Jockey A Fortune appeared before the Board and was questioned with regards to his riding of BETHEL. He explained that this gelding did not feel sound while proceeding to the start and did not stride out freely in running. As a consequence, he did not persevere with his riding from the 500m. He was further questioned as to whether he had reported this matter to the Stipendiary Stewards. He confirmed that he had not made a report. Jockey A Fortune's attention was drawn to the Rules pertaining to a Jockey being obligated to report any circumstances which, in his opinion, would affect the performance of his mount. In view of the Veterinary Surgeon's report regarding BETHEL, this gelding is suspended in terms of Rule 49.7 and a Veterinary Certificate is required prior to racing. Trainer WGC Miller was advised. Trainer WGC Miller was advised to report back should he find anything amiss with this gelding on his return to the stables. d) Jockey X Ndlovu reported that RESURGENCE changed stride continually in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. e) Apprentice N Nastili reported that BASINGSTOKE did not stride out freely in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly. f) BONJOUR LA VILLE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer K Mitchley was advised.
