Stipes Report
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Leaving the 300m, RETALLICK (B Nyawo) was bumped in by CONSTABLE (R Fourie), which shifted in sharply away from the crop and was straightened. Thereafter, CONSTABLE (R Fourie) commenced to hang in in the concluding stages b) Jockey B Nyawo reported that he felt something amiss with RETALLICK in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. c) In view of the performance of GOLIATH HERON (C Habib), (distance 6,40 lengths, betting 33/10), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. Jockey C Habib appeared before the Board and was afforded the opportunity to place on record any factors which may have affected the performance of GOLIATH HERON. He explained to the Board that in this gelding's run on 9 April 2022, he was able to obtain a soft lead and dictate matters from the front of the field. However, in today's race, there was more early pace, which resulted in him electing to sit a length off the front runners. He further stated that he was comfortable with his position and that GOLIATH HERON travelled well, however from the 400m, after being caught flat-footed, GOLIATH HERON had remained one-paced, and the field had quickened away from him. It was his opinion that GOLIATH HERON may be better suited to races over 1200m. Jockey C Habib's explanation was corroborated by the patrol films of the race. d) In view of the Veterinary Surgeon's report concerning RETALLICK, and in terms of Rule 93.1, this gelding is suspended for 60 days from racing in any race under the jurisdiction of the National Horseracing Authority. Trainer R R Magner was advised e) TWICE AS SPLENDID (N Klink), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Stable Employee H Chauque, acting on behalf of Trainer G J Maroun, advised (LN). f) STORMY SEAS (*K A Brewer), unplaced, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Stable Employee C Botha advised (MS). JOCKEY CHANGES: a) SPANISH BOY was ridden by Jockey W Kennedy (declared 5 May 2022 at 06H15). RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER: a) GOLIATH HERON raced equipped with alumites in front and unshod behind (declared 28 April 2022 at 14H29). b) SPANISH BOY raced without cheekpieces (declared 5 May 2022 at 06H23). c) MUFASA raced without blinkers (declared 5 May 2022 at 06H44). THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED: a) RETALLICK coughing; brush wound right hind; bilateral epistaxis, recommended 60-day suspension. Trainer R R Magner was advised (TL). b) GOLIATH HERON examined post race, nothing obvious detected. c) CONSTABLE brush wound left hind. . THERE WERE NO SCRATCHINGS. DISQUALIFIED / DECLARED NON-RUNNER: None.
