Stipes Report
THE STARTER REPORTED: a) MAGIC MOMENTS (C Habib) was nervous and reared in the stalls and rushed the front gates as the start was effected. b) SUCH LUCK (X Ndlovu) was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Shortly after the start TWICE THE SECRET (*K Strydom) was squeezed out between GIFT OF GIVING (JP van der Merwe) and WILDEST DREAMS (G Cheyne). b) SUCH LUCK (X Ndlovu) was encouraged forward to obtain a front-running position and as a consequence, raced wide around the first turn and into the back straight and compounded from the 300m. c) ESHRAAQ (W Kennedy) was momentarily inconvenienced behind SUCH LUCK (X Ndlovu) and SUGAR SNAP (S Khathi) entering the home straight. d) In the concluding stages SUGAR SNAP (S Khathi) was carried in marginally by WILDEST DREAMS (G Cheyne) which shifted in away from the crop. e) Jockey S Khathi appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding his riding of SUGAR SNAP, with particular reference as to why he hesitated with his riding for a number of strides at the 200m. Jockey Khathi could offer no suitable explanation other than that he had spared SUGAR SNAP for as long as possible as this filly had a very short run in. The Board recorded his explanation, however, Jockey Khathi was advised that he had ridden his mount with vigour and purpose prior to this incident and that his lack of vigour at the 200m had come under notice when at this stage of the race, every horse should be under a hard ride while being tested. He was informed that this was the second occasion inside the last three weeks that the Stewards had cause to address him relating to similar concerns and was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out in a manner so as to leave no room for query from the Stewards. f) TWICE THE SECRET, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer Z Oosthuizen was advised.
