Stipes Report
THE STARTER REPORTED: a) ALL THE TIME (G Wright) lost one length. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) SONJADOR (K Sakayi) raced wide in the early stages. b) ABSOLUTE VALUE (C Habib) raced wide throughout. c) BEECHURST (R Khathi) was hanging in, in the straight. d) When questioned Jockey J P v'd Merwe, the rider of CAPETOWN AFFAIR, told the Stewards that his instructions were to lead which is the tactics which are normally adopted by this gelding. He added that the gelding had taken hold of the bit and had sustained a tempo which was faster than he would have preferred and that he was aware that he was well clear of the field in the middle stages of the Race. Upon straightening, the gelding commenced to give ground which he anticipated due to its early exertions. When the Stewards enquired if the fitting of the blinkers had contributed to the gelding's style of running today, Jockey J P v'd Merwe acknowledged that in its previous run over 1200m, the gelding had benefitted from the fitment of the blinkers and the front running tactics but today's 1600m had been a bridge too far for the gelding. The Stewards noted Jockey J P v'd Merwe's explanation. e) Jockey C Habib reported that he felt something amiss with ABSOLUTE VALUE in the running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. f) PEWTER SKY (K Matsunyane), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer K Naidoo advised (HM).
