THE STARTER REPORTED: a) MIDNIGHT GEM (M Yeni) was stubborn loading. Trainer P P Labuschagne was advised to reschool this mare prior to her next engagement (JB). b) QUEEN OF SMOKE (*P Mxoli) was slow losing one length. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Leaving the 300m, EMERALD PRINCESS (C Habib) was carried in by QUEEN OF SMOKE (*P Mxoli), which was directed inwards to obtain a run on the inside of MIKE'S CHICK (K de Melo). This resulted in EMERALD PRINCESS (C Habib) and QUEEN OF SMOKE (*P Mxoli) coming together and brushing on a number of occasions. A race review was called by a member of the Stipendiary Board which was followed by an Objection being lodged by Jockey C Habib, on behalf of the second-placed horse, EMERALD PRINCESS, against the winner, QUEEN OF SMOKE (*P Mxoli), on the grounds intimidation and interference in the concluding stages. The Objection Board, after reviewing the patrol film of the race and hearing all the evidence put forward by the connections, was of the opinion that EMERALD PRINCESS (C Habib), but for this incident, would have finished in front of QUEEN OF SMOKE (*P Mxoli) and therefore upheld the Objection and amended the Judges result to read as follows: 1st 3 EMERALD PRINCESS (C Habib) 2nd 10 QUEEN OF SMOKE (*P Mxoli) 3rd 4 QUEEN OF SHADOWS (R Simons) 4th 8 GOLDEN ASPEN (M van Rensburg) 5th 5 UNCONDITIONAL LOVE (K Matsunyane) b) Jockey K de Melo reported that he felt something amiss with MIKE'S CHICK in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly. c) QUEEN OF SMOKE (*P Mxoli), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer N Titise, acting on behalf of Trainer S T Pettigrew, was advised (MduP). JOCKEY CHANGES: None. RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER: a) MIDNIGHT GEM raced with a pressure halter (declared 14 December 2022 at 14H41). b) QUEEN OF SMOKE raced equipped with blinkers (declared 15 December 2022 at 06H45). c) UNCONDITIONAL LOVE raced with a tongue tie on (declared 20 December 2022 at 07H31).
