THE STARTER REPORTED: a) BE HOPEFUL (R Fourie) was nervous in the stalls and jumped slow, losing one length. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Jockey L Mxothwa reported that he felt something amiss with PLATINUM RUN and he did not persevere with his riding from the 400m. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this filly. b) Jockey G Lerena reported that PONDEROSA PINE did not stride out freely in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this filly. c) Jockey S Khumalo was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking RED CENTRE more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey Khumalo signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1500,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account the distance over and manner in which Jockey S Khumalo used his crop, his recent record and the number of strikes (13). d) PLATINUM RUN (L Mxothwa) returned suffering from a bilateral epistaxis due to an exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage and is suspended, for a period of 60 days, from racing in any race under the jurisdiction of The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa in terms of Rule 93.1. (Dr J Batt) e) BE HOPEFUL, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer AC Greeff was advised.
