THE STARTER REPORTED: a) FOLLOW ME (*P Mxoli) jumped awkwardly leaving the stalls. b) CAPTAIN PEG (R Fourie) and PATON'S TEARS (M van Rensburg) were slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Jockey C Maujean (ELUSIVE CURRENT) did not persevere with his riding from the 200m. Thereafter, Jockey C Maujean reported that he felt something amiss with ELUSIVE CURRENT in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this mare. b) CAPTAIN PEG (R Fourie), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer N Titise, acting on behalf of Trainer S T Pettigrew, was advised (MS). JOCKEY CHANGES: a) WOKONDA was ridden by Jockey G Lerena (declared 16 March 2023 at 07H51). b) PATON'S TEARS was ridden by Jockey M van Rensburg (declared 18 March 2023 at 07H58). c) STRANGE MAGIC was ridden by Jockey K Matsunyane (declared 18 March 2023 at 08H54). STRANGE MAGIC (Race 4) and MAMAQUERA (Race 5): Jockey K de Melo was charged with a contravention of Rule 55.4 in that he failed to weigh out at the correct carded weight on the horses STRANGE MAGIC and MAMAQUERA, or at the higher weight confirmed in his engagement with the Trainer, which necessitated a change of rider. Jockey K de Melo signed an Admission of Guilt and a penalty of a fine of R1000 was imposed. The Board treated these two offences as one as Jockey de Melo is on prescription medication, and this precluded him from utilising the sweat box. RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER: a) CAPTAIN PEG raced equipped with blinkers (declared 16 March 2023 at 13H51). b) BLACK SILVER raced with a tongue tie on (declared 17 March 2023 at 10H13). THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED: a) ELUSIVE CURRENT not striding out left front. THERE WERE NO SCRATCHINGS. DISQUALIFIED / DECLARED NON-RUNNER: None.
