Stipes Report
THE STARTER REPORTED: a) CHOLLIMA (M Winnaar) got its left hind leg on the running board, was taken out, examined by the course veterinary surgeon, found suitable to race and reloaded. b) SENSO UNICO (R Fourie) was fractious in the stalls, had to be taken out, examined by the course veterinary surgeon, found suitable to race and reloaded. These incidents caused a slight delay. c) CHOLLIMA (M Winnaar) jumped slow, losing one length. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) WAITING FOR SUMMER (W Kennedy) had to steady off the heels of UNIVERSAL (C Zackey) after being carried in by NEVER ENDING RAIN (G Lerena) which jumped in at the start. b) From a wide draw SENSO UNICO (R Fourie) started fairly and raced alone away from other runners in the early stages of the race. Thereafter, upon being directed toward the field, the colt commenced to hang outwards and raced wide on the bend as a result. c) When questioned regarding his ride on PACAYA, Jockey S Khumalo told the Stewards that he and his trainer were concerned with the lack of early pace in the race and that, after a good start, he rode the colt forward in the hope that he would be able to obtain cover. During the early stages of the race, he had intended to obtain cover behind SENSO UNICO (R Fourie) which had raced on the outside of the racecourse and he had assumed would be directed inwards to be placed close to the inside running rail. Consequently, after SENSO UNICO (R Fourie) had not taken the lead, he had been exposed in a forward position and had decided that it would be best to maintain his position as the colt had an easy lead at that stage. In the straight PACAYA (S Khumalo) had commenced to weaken from the 300m and he had felt that the colt was on the wrong leg and had shortened its stride in the closing stages. The Stewards noted his explanation and requested that the veterinary surgeon examine PACAYA. d) CHOLLIMA (M Winnaar) was awkwardly placed between XAVION (K de Melo) and NEVER ENDING RAIN (G Lerena) from the 200m and could not be tested in the concluding stages. e) Jockey L Mxothwa reported that ZAPATILLAS did not stride out freely in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this colt. f) In view of the report from the Starter regarding CHOLLIMA (M Winnaar) Trainer GS Kotzen will be advised to have this gelding re schooled before his next engagement in terms of Rule 61.6.10. g) In view of the report from the starter regarding SENSO UNICO (R Fourie), this colt's starting stall certificate has been withdrawn and he is suspended in terms of Rule 61.6.10 and until such time as he proves to be tractable with a companion. Suspension dates: 30/01/2022 to 05/02/2022 inclusive). SENSO UNICO may not be presented for re-passing during this period. h) UNIVERSAL, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer AN Marcus was advised.
