Stipes Report
THE STARTER REPORTED: a) BLACK THORN (J P van der Merwe), TROIS TROIS QUATRE (S Khumalo) and OPERA GLASS (J Gates) were slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) OPERA GLASS (J Gates) hung in from the 300m. b) When questioned, Jockey P Mxoli, the rider of OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE, told the Stewards his instructions were to race from the front of the field at a decent tempo. When he was asked why he had allowed the gelding to race well in advance of the field, he responded by stating that the gelding had taken a hold of the bit and as a result, his efforts to bring OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE back to the field and to conserve his energy had been in vain. He added that it was not his intention to build up such a lead as he had done and that he was aware of where his competitors were positioned. Following this explanation, the Stewards showed Jockey Mxoli the patrol film of the home straight and advised him of their concerns in relation to his crop use on the gelding when it had commenced to give ground and had come to the end of its run. He was advised that in similar circumstances he should ride his mounts with his hands and heels and refrain from using his crop on a horse which is out of contention for a place. c) In view of the performance of BATTLEGROUND (R Fourie), (distance 20,00 lengths, betting 4/1), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. d) In view of the performance of TROIS TROIS QUATRE (S Khumalo), (distance 22,00 lengths, betting 6/1), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. e) ZEUS (G Lerena), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
