Stipes Report

THE STARTER REPORTED:

a)	Fair start.

THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:

a)	DOUBLE GRAND SLAM (G van Niekerk) hesitated and rolled out leaving the 1200m.
b)	When questioned regarding his riding in the straight, Jockey G van Niekerk (DOUBLE GRAND SLAM) told the Stewards that he adopted an inside position upon straightening, ultimately behind the second-place finisher RASCOVA (C Zackey). Following this, he felt that the filly did not improve as he would have liked and allowed her to shift outwards in order to race with company in the hope that she would finish the race off strongly. When it was put to him that he had covered substantial ground in allowing the filly to shift outwards, he responded that, in his opinion, the benefits obtained by her having company had offset covering the extra ground. The Stewards noted his explanation but did advise Jockey G van Niekerk not to cover unnecessary ground in races without good reason for doing so.
c)	Jockey JP van der Merwe reported that BEACH BOMB did not stride out freely in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly.
d)	PRINCESS CALLA, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SG Tarry was advised. (WM)
e)	DOUBLE GRAND SLAM, the third-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised. (WM)
