Stipes Report

THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) HOTARUBI (S Khumalo) jumped inwards leaving the stalls.
b) SECOND BASE (C Maujean) was slow into stride.
c) PURE PREDATOR (R Fourie) was squeezed out shortly after the start.

THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) Shortly after the start, SAFE PASSAGE (M Yeni) and PURE PREDATOR (R Fourie) were bumped in by HOTARUBI (S Khumalo), which jumped inwards leaving the stalls.
b) When questioned, Jockey G Lerena (PUERTO MANZANO) told the Stewards that this gelding started fairly and that he had been content to take up a trailing position in the early and middle stages. He added that at approximately the 1100m the gelding commenced to give ground to the field and in his estimation was close to 10 lengths behind, SECOND BASE, at that stage. He said that shortly after entering the straight, he had concerns with the action of PUERTO MANZANO and had reservations if the gelding was striding out well enough for him to ask for an effort in the home straight. He stated that, at about the 400m, the gelding started to respond to his riding, albeit a hand and heels ride and that he had managed to sustain a fairly strong closing effort. He concluded by saying that he felt PUERTO MANZANO did not stride out one hundred percent in running and that, in his opinion, the gelding should be retired from racing after today's race. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.
c) PURE PREDATOR (R Fourie), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
