THE STARTER REPORTED: a) CRUISE CONTROL (JP van der Merwe) was stubborn loading. b) INHERIT THE RAIN (S Khumalo) and EVIES FIRST (L Mxothwa) were slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) EVIES FIRST (L Mxothwa) was hanging in from the 400m and had to be corrected on two occasions at the 300m and the 100m. b) In view of the performance of INHERIT THE RAIN (S Khumalo), which was outpaced in the early stages and progressively gave ground to the field, the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. c) Jockey L Mxothwa was charged with a contravention of Rule 66.4 (read with Guideline 1 on overweight) in that he, as the rider of EVIES FIRST, weighed back in at 56.6kgs, 1.1kg in excess of the weight at which he was declared out (55.5kgs). Jockey L Mxothwa signed an Admission of Guilt and was fined R2000.00. In assessing this penalty, the Stewards gave due regard to Jockey L Mxothwa's recent record regarding overweight, both weighing in and weighing out in races. Jockey L Mxothwa was advised that should this pattern of a contravening Rules 55.4 and 66.4 continue, the Stewards will consider placing a weight restriction on him. d) CRUISE CONTROL, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer GD Smith was advised. (SP) e) LIGHT THAT LOOSE, the fifth-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer WGC Miller was advised.
