THE STARTER REPORTED: a) NAVAL SECRET (M Yeni) rushed the front gates of the starting stalls. b) AL QAASIM (R Munger), TARANTINO (C Bantam) and CELTILLUS (R Fourie) were slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) AL QAASIM (R Munger) proved difficult to settle in the early stages. b) Jockey M Mjoka was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline D and M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking LIFE ON MARS more than 12 times in the entire race and with excessive force. Jockey M Mjoka signed an admission of guilt and was fined R2500,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account the distance over and manner in which Jockey M Mjoka used his crop, his recent record and the number of strikes (15) over the permissible level. c) CELTILLUS, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer AC Greeff was advised. (LM) d) GREENLIGHTTOHEAVEN, the second-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer WGC Miller was advised.
