THE STARTER REPORTED: a) I'M IN LOVE (JP van der Merwe) was nervous in the stalls and fly-jumped leaving the stalls, losing one length. b) FLOWERS OF NIKE (K de Melo) jumped inwards. c) TANGO MIST (M Mjoka) jumped outwards. d) CASSOWARY (W Agrella) and LOVIN' YOU BABY (R Munger) were slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) FLOWERS OF NIKE (K de Melo) changed stride awkwardly at the 100m. b) LOVIN' YOU BABY (R Munger) was hanging in in the straight. c) When questioned regarding the poor performance of I'M IN LOVE, which was having its first run at Fairview racecourse and its first run for Trainer GD Smith, Jockey JP van der Merwe told the Stewards that after jumping awkwardly and losing some ground at the start, the filly had felt very uncomfortable in her action and had not responded to his urgings in the early stages. He further stated that on entering the home stretch, the filly had shown no signs of making up any ground and had, in fact, given ground to the field. He therefore had not persevered with his riding from the 300m. He further noticed that she was making a respiratory noise in the pull up. The Stewards noted his explanation and requested the veterinary surgeon to examine this filly. d) RIVER BIRCH, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer AC Greeff was advised. (LM) e) MI MI APPLE PIE, the second placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SB Kotzen was advised. (LM) JOCKEY AND/OR EQUIPMENT CHANGES: a) CASSOWARY raced with blinkers (declared 07h38 on 20221007) RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER a) Nil. THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED: a) I'M IN LOVE - examined post-race. Nothing obvious detected; no abnormal respiratory noise detected. Trainer GD Smith was advised to report back should he find anything amiss with this filly on her return to the stables. b) TANGO MIST - post-race distress SCRATCHED a) DUCHESS OF AFRICA - lame left front.
