THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Jockey M Yeni reported that TIDE IS HIGH took no interest in running. When questioned regarding the poor performance of TIDE IS HIGH Jockey M Yeni told the Stewards that after showing good early pace, the filly had failed to respond to his urgings and had given ground to the field in the latter stages. He further stated that, in his opinion, this filly may benefit from the use of blinkers in future engagements. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this filly. b) Jockey X Ndlovu (KAROO MAGIC) appeared before the Board and was advised that his use of the crop had come under notice. He was advised to refrain from using his crop as frequently in the concluding stages as he had done on this occasion and to allow his mounts more time to respond. c) TANGO MIST (L Mxothwa) returned suffering from a bilateral epistaxis due to an exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage and is suspended, for a period of 60 days, from racing in any race under the jurisdiction of The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa in terms of Rule 93.1. (Dr J Batt) d) Jockey S Khathi was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking HAZY CRAZY NIGHT more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey S Khathi signed an admission of guilt and was fined R3500,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account the distance over and manner in which Jockey S Khathi used his crop, his recent record and the number of strikes (15) over the permissible level. e) FLOWERS OF NIKE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer GD Smith was advised.
