THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) In the early stages, AFRICAN TORRENT (K Matsunyane) proved difficult to settle whilst attempting to obtain cover behind MERIDIUS (G Lerena). b) Jockey G Lerena was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking MERIDIUS more than twelve times in the entire race. Jockey G Lerena signed an Admission of Guilt and a fine of R750 was imposed. When assessing this penalty, the Board took into consideration the number of times the crop was used (13) and Jockey G Lerena's recent record with regard to this Rule and Guideline (1). c) AFRICAN TORRENT (K Matsunyane), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
