THE STARTER REPORTED: a) ADMIRAL BIRNHAM (D Ashby) jumped inwards and made contact with MISTER MONOCLE (C Bantam) which, as a consequence, was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Leaving the 400m a tiring MACHETE MAN (R Fourie), which was hanging out, rolled out and brushed QUATERMAIN (C Orffer). b) Jockey D Ashby reported that ADMIRAL BIRNHAM changed stride continually in running and he did not persevere with his riding from the 300m. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. c) Jockey K de Melo reported that POLICY TARGET did not stride out freely in running and he did not persevere with his riding from the 200m. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. d) In the concluding stages WILLIAM THE FIRST (S Veale) was carried out marginally by SUDDEN SONG (G Wright), which was hanging out from the 200m and shifted out in the latter stages. e) In view of the performance of QUATERMAIN (C Orffer), which tired quickly from the 150m and was not persevered with in the latter stages, the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. f) In view of the performance of MACHETE MAN (R Fourie) (Betting 7/2 ; Distance 6.30) which, after leading the field, failed to respond to Jockey R Fourie's urgings, the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. g) SUDDEN SONG, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
