THE STARTER REPORTED: a) POMP AND POWER (R Fourie) jumped awkwardly. b) WINCHESTER MANSION (L Mxothwa) were slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) POMP AND POWER (R Fourie) raced with his head up and proved difficult to settle in the early stages. b) At the 350m SILVANO'S TIMER (K de Melo) rolled in away from WINCHESTER MANSION (L Mxothwa), which was hanging in, and brushed GEM KING (R Munger). Shortly thereafter, GEM KING (R Munger) had to be steadied when awkwardly placed between SILVANO'S TIMER (K de Melo) and SILVER HOST (*RA Venniker). c) Leaving the 100m DO IT AGAIN (B Fayd'Herbe) was bumped by NEBRAAS (G Lerena), which was directed inwards to continue its run. Jockey G Lerena appeared before the Board, was shown the patrol film and was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. d) Jockey G Wright reported that he felt something amiss with AIRWAYS LAW. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. e) Jockey R Fourie reported that POMP AND POWER made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding f) Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M and C on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking WARRIOR more than 12 times in the entire race and on consecutive strides. Jockey G van Niekerk signed an admission of guilt and was fined R5000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account the distance over and manner in which Jockey G van Niekerk used his crop, the number of strikes (16), that he had contravened two of the Guidelines with regard to this Rule and the value and status of this race. g) RASCALLION, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer VH Marshall was advised. (DD) h) NEXUS, the second-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised. (CvA) JOCKEY AND/OR EQUIPMENT CHANGES: a) WINCHESTER MANSION raced with cheek pieces (declared 10h52 on 20230105) RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER a) Nil THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED: a) AIRWAYS LAW - examined post-race. Nothing obvious detected b) POMP AND POWER - blood in mouth c) NEXUS - abnormal respiratory noise d) DO IT AGAIN - abnormal respiratory noise e) WARRIOR - abnormal respiratory noise SCRATCHED: a) FUTURE PRINCE - lame right hind. Rule 53.5 applies (declared 10h51 on 20230105)
