THE STARTER REPORTED: a) WINTER PEARL (C Orffer) was restless, sat back in the stalls as the start was effected and jumped awkwardly, losing two lengths. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) LANG'S POWER (G Wright) and PONTE PIETRA (K de Melo) were hanging out from the 400m. b) Jockey C Orffer was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking WINTER PEARL more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey C Orffer signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account the distance over and manner in which Jockey C Orffer used his crop and the number of strikes (13). c) FORT RED, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer R Barrett, acting on behalf of Trainer JMT Stewart, was advised.
