THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Shortly after the start SILVER FALCON (R Fourie) was brushed on both sides by WICCAN WARRIOR (K Steyn) and SHAMPOMPO SHAMPIZI (S Khumalo). As a consequence, SILVER FALCON (R Fourie) was steadied and lost position. b) Jockeys J Jacobs and R Fourie reported that VOLDEMORT and SILVER FALCON respectively did not stride out freely in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine these geldings. c) When questioned regarding the improved performance of SOLAR POWER as compared to his previous run on 7 December 2022, Trainer B Crawford told the Stewards that that race was SOLAR POWER's first run back after being gelded and an 8 month rest. He further told the Stewards that after winning on 6 April 2022, this horse had suffered a serious injury which had necessitated the long rest and that this gelding is better suited to the 1400m of today's race. Trainer B Crawford's explanation was noted. d) Jockey K Steyn was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking WICCAN WARRIOR more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey K Steyn signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account the distance over and manner in which Jockey K Steyn used his crop and the number of strikes (13). e) SOLAR POWER, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer B Crawford was advised.
