THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) LADY RENEE (A Arries) jumped outwards and carried LOVE RULES (G van Niekerk) outwards as the start was effected.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) Leaving the 1000m ON BOARD (R Khathi) clipped the heels of COASTAL BLUES (D Ashby).
b) Leaving the 300m COASTAL BLUES (D Ashby) was bumped on two occasions by APPLE CATCHER (S Veale), which commenced to give ground quickly to the field and rolled in. When questioned regarding his riding of COASTAL BLUES in the concluding stages, Jockey D Ashby told the Stewards that after being bumped on two occasions by a tiring APPLE CATCHER (S Veale) at the 300m, COASTAL BLUES (D Ashby) had felt uncomfortable in its action and had changed stride awkwardly leaving the 50m. After viewing the patrol film, taking into account the veterinary surgeon's report regarding COASTAL BLUES and considering the distance between the 4th and 5th placed horses (0.30 lengths), the Stewards were of the opinion that a charge in terms of Rule 62.2.3 could not be sustained. However, Jockey D Ashby was advised that he ride his mounts out to the finish with sufficient vigour and determination when circumstances permit.
c) In view of the performance of APPLE CATCHER (S Veale) (Betting 1/1 ; Distance 12.60 lengths), which pulled hard in the early stages, the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this filly.
d) Jockey JP van der Merwe reported that ELECTRIC FEELS made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this filly.
e) LOVE RULES (G van Niekerk) returned suffering from a bilateral epistaxis due to an exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage and is suspended, for a period of 120 days, from racing in any race under the jurisdiction of The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa in terms of Rule 93.1. (Dr J Batt)
f) LOVE RULES, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised. (SC)
