THE STARTER REPORTED: a) A fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) Shortly after the start SILVANO'S DASHER (K Matsunyane) and SAFE PASSAGE (R Fourie) came together and bumped. b) At the 100m GIMME A PRINCE (K de Melo) was carried out by TRIP OF FORTUNE (A Domeyer) which shifted out away from the crop and was straightened. c) At the 50m WILLIAM ROBERTSON (P Strydom) and SURJAY (L Mxothwa) came together and bumped. d) Jockey P Strydom reported that his saddle slipped backwards in the running. This was confirmed by the Veterinary Surgeon. e) In view of the performance of SAFE PASSAGE (R Fourie) (14.75 lengths, 10/1 in the betting), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. Trainer M De Kock was advised to report back to the Stipendiary Board on the condition of this gelding on return to stables. Jockey R Fourie appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SAFE PASSAGE. Jockey R Fourie explained that he was somewhat surprised by this gelding's indifferent performance and he felt that SAFE PASSAGE had never taken the bit during the running and hence raced detached from the field throughout. He added that the gelding was returning from a lengthy lay off and that in his opinion, todays trip of 1400m may be on the short side at this stage of his career. His explanation was noted by the Board. f) TRIP OF FORTUNE (A Domeyer), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer C Bass-Robinson advised (DZ). g) GIMME A PRINCE (K de Melo), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer D Kannemeyer advised (DA). JOCKEY / EQUIPMENT CHANGES : a) Jockey P Strydom (WILLIAM ROBERTSON) weighed out at 59.1kg, 0.5kg over the carded weight. RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER : a) Nil. THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED : a) SAFE PASSAGE : Nothing obvious detected. b) SURJAY : Moderate post-race distress.
