EXPLOSIVE BEAUTY (AUS) lost 1 length. EL BALLERO reared in the stalls. MAXIMA returned post-race having cast the left fore shoe. At the 400m, EXPLOSIVE BEAUTY (AUS) had to ease when awkwardly placed between BORDEAUX which shifted in away from the crop and ROCK WITH ME, which shifted out marginally. Jockey de Melo reported that HAMMAN was not striding out freely in the concluding stages. Jockey Dillon reported that MAXIMA choked up in running. Jockey Wright signed an admission of guilt for a contravention, read in conjunction with Guideline M, in that he struck the horse BORDEAUX more than 12 times in the entire race. In deciding what penalty to impose, the Board considered the manner in which Jockey Wright used the crop and his record in relation to this Rule. Accordingly, a penalty of R1000 was imposed. Trainer Badenhorst appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding the improved performance of BORDEAUX, the winner. In this regard, he explained that in addition to the step up in distance, the experience of his first run and better draw, BORDEAUX had improved immensely after the addition of blinkers. Trainer Badenhorst undertook to race this colt similarly equipped in future. The Board noted the explanation of Trainer Badenhorst and will continue to monitor the performances of BORDEAUX in future. BORDEAUX was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. EXPLOSIVE BEAUTY (AUS) raced fitted with ear-muffs. Vet: HAMMAN - not striding out left fore. MAXIMA - nothing obvious detected. Scratched: JUDD - elevated temperature. THE KINGDOM - swollen left fore joint.
