THE STARTER REPORTED: a) POMP AND POWER (K Matsunyane) and CAT DADDY (A Arries) jumped awkwardly and thereafter were slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) In a tightly bunched field shortly after the start GEM KING (A Domeyer) clipped heels and stumbled. b) At the 150m MASTER REDOUTE (C Orffer) was momentarily held up behind ITSRAININGWILLIAM (JP van der Merwe), which rolled in marginally. Thereafter MASTER REDOUTE (C Orffer) was directed outwards and brushed CAT DADDY (A Arries), which was hanging in at the 50m. Jockey C Orffer and Trainer WA Nel reviewed this incident and after viewing the patrol film, took no further action. Jockey JP van der Merwe appeared before the Board and was advised that while the Stewards accepted that the inward movement of MASTER REDOUTE at the 150m was marginal, he still has an obligation to ensure that he keeps his mounts on a straight course in similar circumstances. c) HAN SOLO (D de Gouveia) was unable to secure clear running between the 100m and the finish when close to the heels of POMP AND POWER (K Matsunyane). d) Jockey L Mxothwa reported that HOEDSPRUIT made an abnormal respiratory noise and did not stride out freely in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. e) ITSRAININGWILLIAM, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised.
