THE STARTER REPORTED: a) WINDRUNNER (M Winnaar), FLAMBOYANT FLYER (D Ashby) and LILY OF THE NILE (G van Niekerk) were restless in the stalls. b) PEACE FROG (A Andrews) jumped slow, losing one length. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Approaching the 200m SUNSHINE DAY (C Zackey) had to be steadied and directed inwards when tightened for galloping room between GREEN VALKYRIE (K de Melo) and a tiring WINDRUNNER (M Winnaar), which rolled out. After being straightened, WINDRUNNER (M Winnaar) then shifted in away from the crop and carried SUNSHINE DAY (C Zackey) inwards. b) Jockey A Andrews reported that he felt something amiss with PEACE FROG. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this filly. c) Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking LILY OF THE NILE more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey G van Niekerk signed an admission of guilt and was fined R7500,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account Jockey G van Niekerk's record and the number of strikes (15). d) GREEN VALKYRIE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer T Woolard, acting on behalf of Trainer GS Kotzen, was advised.
