THE STARTER REPORTED: a) HAPPINESS IS (J Gates) was nervous in the stalls and rushed the front gates. b) HAPPINESS IS (J Gates) and FOLLOW THE BAND (G Pieterse) bumped leaving the stalls. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) HAPPINESS IS (J Gates) had to be re-saddled at the start, causing a delay. b) At the 1500m FOLLOW THE BAND (G Pieterse) was turned outwards when brushed on the hindquarters by HAPPINESS IS (J Gates), which was tightened for galloping room between FOLLOW THE BAND (G Pieterse), which rolled out marginally and GUERRA (R Fourie), which shifted in slightly. As a consequence, HAPPINESS IS (J Gates) had to be checked away from the heels of GUERRA (R Fourie). Jockey R Fourie appeared before the Board and was advised to be more aware of runners to his inside in similar circumstances. c) SUNDROP (K Steyn) proved difficult to settle in the early and middle stages. d) Jockey JP van der Merwe reported that FLORIDA HILLS, which gave ground to the field from the 600m and was not persevered with from the 300m, coughed in running. The veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this colt. e) Trainer GD Smith was charged with a contravention of Rule 8.3.1 in that he failed to have available the registered colours of the owner/s of FIERY CLIFFS. Assistant Trainer Mr FJ Jacobs, acting on behalf of Trainer GD Smith, signed an Admission of Guilt and Trainer GD Smith was fined R250,00. f) BEAU KALA, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer K Mitchley was advised.
