THE STARTER REPORTED: a) GRAND BAY (C Zackey) rushed the front gates in the stalls, was taken out, examined by the course veterinary surgeon, passed suitable to race and reloaded. b) FORT RED (G van Niekerk) jumped awkwardly. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Approaching the 250m GRAND BAY (C Zackey) was unbalanced when steadied away from the heels of FORT RED (G van Niekerk), which shifted in when carried in by BONANZA (D Ashby), which was carried in by NIGHT TIGER (M Winnaar), which shifted in. b) Approaching the 100m FORT RED (G van Niekerk) was severely cramped for galloping room and made contact with CAFE CULTURE (B Fayd'Herbe) while improving on the inside of NIGHT TIGER (M Winnaar). An Inquiry will be held into this incident. c) In view of the report from the Starter regarding GRAND BAY (C Zackey), Trainer B Crawford will be advised to have this gelding re-schooled prior to his next engagement in terms of Rule 61.6.10. d) Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking FORT RED more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey G van Niekerk signed an admission of guilt and was fined R4000,00. In determining penalty, the Stewards took into account his record and the number of strikes (14). e) BENJAMIN, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer C Bass-Robinson was advised.
