THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) MISS LEMONADE (JP van der Merwe) was reluctant to load.
b) ROYAL LYTHAM (D Ashby) was restless in the stalls.
c) MIA'S HARPER (K de Melo) jumped slow, losing one length.
d) TRUE HORIZON (R Fourie) was restless in the stalls and jumped slow, losing two lengths.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) Steady rain fell prior to and during the running of this race.
b) MISS LEMONADE (JP van der Merwe) took an awkward stride shortly after the start.
c) In view of the performance of ELLORIX, which took an awkward stride at the 1000m, the veterinary surgeon was requested to examine this filly. After the race, Jockey A Domeyer reported that ELLORIX did not act in the soft underfoot conditions.
d) TRUE HORIZON (R Fourie) changed stride awkwardly at the 800m.
e) In view of the report from the Starter regarding MISS LEMONADE (JP van der Merwe), Trainer SJ Snaith will be advised to have this filly re-schooled prior to her next engagement in terms of Rule 61.6.10.
f) Following the running of Race 1, rider representatives approached the Stewards and lodged a protest regarding their concerns relating to soft and inconsistent underfoot conditions which, in their opinion, impacted on their safety. The Stewards, in terms of Rule 5.2.3, having heard evidence from the respective officials and licensees, determined that the underfoot conditions were inconsistent and that this may prejudice rider safety, horse welfare and the integrity of racing. As the forecast was for further rain, a unanimous decision was taken to abandon the remainder of the race meeting in the interests of rider safety and horse welfare.
g) MIA'S HARPER, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer DM Kannemeyer was advised. (SL)
