THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) SPRING PALACE (JP van der Merwe) was restless in the stalls.
b) MONUMENTAL (K de Melo) was stubborn loading and restless in the stalls.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) MONUMENTAL (K de Melo) proved difficult proceeding to the start and had to be led by a Handler, causing a delay. This gelding is suspended indefinitely in terms of Rule 93.2.4 until such time as he proves tractable proceeding to the start on a race day.
b) At the 300m HLUHLUWE (G van Niekerk), which was hanging out, shifted out slightly and was brushed on the hindquarters by SPRING PALACE (JP van der Merwe). As a consequence, SPRING PALACE (JP van der Merwe) had to be steadied and made contact with the hindquarters of TYRION LANNISTER (P Strydom), which was turned inwards and became unbalanced for a number of strides. After reviewing this incident, the Stewards were satisfied that a charge could not be sustained against any rider.
c) Trainer AE Sands was questioned regarding the improved performance of MY GOLLY MOLLY (S Veale) compared to this colt's previous race on 5 July 2023, which was over 1200m. He told the Stewards that prior to that race, the training tracks at Milnerton had been flooded as a result of the heavy rains. As a consequence, this colt, which had raced handy on that occasion, had tired in the latter stages. He further told the Stewards that he felt today's race over 1500m was more suitable for this colt and that he had instructed Jockey S Veale that he ride MY GOLLY MOLLY patiently in the early stages which in his opinion, had accounted for the improved performance.
d) In view of the report from the Starter regarding MONUMENTAL (K de Melo) and SPRING PALACE (JP van der Merwe), Trainers GS Kotzen and SJ Snaith will be advised to have these geldings re-schooled prior to their next engagements in terms of Rule 61.6.10.
e) MY GOLLY MOLLY, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer AE Sands was advised. (TJ)
