THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) BONNAROO (R Fourie) was stubborn loading.
b) BAUBLES AND BEADS (M Mjoka) was nervous in the stalls.
c) TRIED AND TRUE (S Khathi) kicked the back gates in the starting stalls.
d) VIHZOE'S MAGIC (J Jacobs) and RIMAAH (K Minnie) were slow into stride.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) PRINCESS DEB'S (C Habib) was hanging in throughout.
b) At the 300m EASY LIVING (S Khumalo) was steadied and switched out to continue its run.
c) Jockey J Jacobs (VIHZOE'S MAGIC) dropped his crop at the 100m.
d) Jockey J Jacobs was questioned regarding his riding of VIHZOE'S MAGIC, with particular reference to his vigour and determination shown from the 300m. Mr Jacobs told the Stewards that his instructions were to drop this mare out at the start and to give her the opportunity to close her race off strongly from a trailing position as she has a short run in. The Stewards advised Mr Jacobs that his riding of the mare had come under notice when an opportunity had presented itself for him to improve at the 300m and that he had appeared to lack vigour in the first few strides when he had obtained clear running. Mr Jacobs was advised that even though he had dropped his crop at the 100m, he should ride his mounts out with sufficient vigour and determination so there is no reason for the Stewards to query his riding. He was further advised that if he is instructed to hold his mounts up until as late as possible in a race, he should draw this to the Stewards attention well in advance of the event.
e) In view of the performance of BONNAROO (R Fourie) (Betting 83/100; Distance 7.95 lengths) the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this mare.
f) Jockey J Jacobs was charged with a contravention of Rule 55.4 in that he failed to weigh out at the carded weight on VIHZOE'S MAGIC. Jockey J Jacobs signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000.00.
g) CHERE FOR ME, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer JVA Strydom was advised. (LM)
