HIDDEN AGENDA lifted its left front shoe en route to the start, which was attended to by the Farrier. This caused a delay to the start of this Race. MOVIE MAGIC was restless in the stalls. SOVEREIGN REIGN jumped inwards. PELICAN BAY was slow into stride. At approximately the 800m LONG POND and PELICAN BAY came together and bumped. Thereafter, approaching the 350m, PELICAN BAY had to switch in to avoid running onto the heels of ROMAN FLIGHT. Apprentice Syster appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding his ride on PELICAN BAY. He explained to the Board that his instructions were to jump and sit handy, however, after being slow away he decided to track the leaders on the outside of the course. He then had an opportunity to improve his position at the 800m, however, he was of the opinion that this was too soon in the race and elected not to make use of it. He then ran onto the heels of ROMAN FLIGHT at the 350m and subsequently took evasive action to avoid CHANGING SEASONS, which had broken down. Apprentice Syster also reported that PELICAN BAY took two awkward strides in the concluding stages. Apprentice Syster's future rides will be monitored. At approximately the 250m SHORT AND SWEET took evasive action to avoid CHANGING SEASONS, which had broken down and was eased out the race. Jockey Yeni reported that MOVIE MAGIC did not striding out freely in running. HIDDEN AGENDA cast its right front shoe in running. HIDDEN AGENDA was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. SOVEREIGN REIGN raced equipped with a tongue tie. Vet: CHANGING SEASONS - broke down left front. Humanely euthanased. Specimens collected for analysis. MOVIE MAGIC - blood in mouth. IN THE GAME - coughing. Scratched: SAMMI MOOSA - insufficient recovery time.
AFTER THE RUNNING OF RACE 8, A PROTEST WAS LODGED BY THE JOCKEYS WITH REGARDS TO THE SAFETY OF THE TRACK, IN PARTICULAR THE INCONSISTENT UNDERFOOT CONDITIONS. A PANEL WAS FORMED AND DISCUSSIONS WERE HELD REGARDING THE POSSIBILITY OF THE RACE MEETING CONTINUING. THE TWO JOCKEY REPRESENTATIVES HIGHLIGHTED THAT IT WAS A UNANIMOUS DECISION BY ALL THE RIDERS NOT TO CONTINUE RACING. AFTER OPINIONS BEING PUT FORWARD BY THE SENIOR NHA VETERINARY SURGEON, TRAINERS AND PHUMELELA MANAGEMENT, IT WAS DECIDED RACE 9 SHOULD BE ABANDONED.
