THE STARTER REPORTED: a) MOUNTAIN OF SMOKE (B Jacobson) Lost 2 lengths. b) ONLY A POET (M Thackeray) Lost 1 length. c) FLAG MAN (*S Hlengwa) and PIETER BOTH (C Zackey) were restless in the stalls, removed, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon, declared fit to race and re-loaded. d) THE SHEPHERD (R Fourie) was restless in the stalls, removed, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon, declared fit to race and re-loaded. Thereafter, this colt became fractious in the stalls. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) The Stipendiary Board called for review of the start, pertaining to stall gate 9, THE SHEPHERD (R Fourie) which proved to be fractious in the stalls and reversed out the back gates as the start was effected. The Board was of the opinion that THE SHEPHERD (R Fourie) had not been in the starting stalls as the start was effected, and acting in terms of Rule 61.6.11, this colt was declared a non-runner. b) HEROIC POWER (T Godden) was squeezed out shortly after the start. c) Leaving the 400m MOUNTAIN OF SMOKE (B Jacobson) was steadied and switched out off the heels of OBADIAH (*T Mayhew) which had come to the end of its run. d) Approaching the 200m GIVE US A SMILE (S Moodley) was switched to the inside of RUN TO RIO (S Veale) to continue its run. Thereafter GIVE US A SMILE (S Moodley) was steadied when awkwardly placed on the heels of RUN TO RIO (S Veale) which shifted in away from the crop and was immediately corrected. e) At the 100m GIVE US A SMILE (S Moodley) was inconvenienced when awkwardly placed on the outside of the heels of RUN TO RIO (S Veale). f) Jockeys C Habib (MO KING) and C Zackey (PIETER BOTH) reported that their respective mounts faltered on a number of occasions, in the running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. g) In view of the Starter's report with regard to THE SHEPHERD (R Fourie), this colt's starting stall certificate is withdrawn and it is suspended in terms of Rule 61.6.10 for a period of 7 days and until such time as it proves tractable with a companion. (Suspension dates : 04.09.23-10.09.23, bdi). h) FLIGHT PATH (J Jacobs), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer G B Puller advised (DZ).
