THE STARTER REPORTED: a) LANDINGONTHEMOON (D Ashby) was stubborn loading. b) SHUNMYO (M Yeni) and SAHNISH GIRL (Y Ramzan) were nervous in the stalls. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) From a wide draw BIG FELLA (E Webber) was ridden forward and then raced freely at the front of the field. Thereafter, BIG FELLA (E Webber) took an awkward stride approaching the 50m. b) Leaving the 1200m SUNDROP (X Ndlovu) had to be steadied when close to the heels of FLAMING DRUM (G Lerena), which over raced in the early and middle stages and rolled out on the early part of the turn. c) At the 850m AFRODITE went amiss and was immediately eased out of the race by Jockey S Khathi. SHUNMYO (M Yeni), which was following, had to be checked and directed outwards to avoid the stricken horse. As a consequence, MOHANDAS (R Fourie), LANDINGONTHEMOON (D Ashby) and ANNA KARENINA (S Khumalo) were in turn steadied and taken wide on the latter part of the turn. d) Jockey M van Rensburg reported that he felt something amiss with TEMPELHOFF, which took a number of awkward strides approaching the 300m and he did not persevere with his riding thereafter. ANNA KARENINA (S Khumalo), which was following, had to be directed outwards to avoid the heels of TEMPELHOFF (M van Rensburg) as a consequence. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine TEMPELHOFF. e) At the 250m MOHANDAS (R Fourie), which showed a tendency to hang inwards, was directed to the inside of WOLFRAM (C Maujean) to continue its run. f) BIG FELLA, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer K Mitchley was advised. (LM) JOCKEY AND/OR EQUIPMENT CHANGES: a) BIG FELLA raced with alumites in front, unshod behind (declared 10h14 on 20230906) b) BIG FELLA raced with a compression mask (declared 07h52 on 20230908) c) SUNDROP raced without blinkers and pacifiers (declared 15h04 on 20230907) d) SAHNISH GIRL raced with a tongue tie (declared 07h44 on 20230905) e) M van Rensburg (TEMPELHOFF) roe +0.5kg (54.9kgs) RACE CARD CHANGES / OTHER a) Nil THE VETERINARY SURGEON REPORTED: a) TEMPELHOFF - examined post-race. Nothing obvious detected. Trainer SB Kotzen was advised to report back should she find anything amiss with this mare on her return to the stables. b) ANNA KARENINA - coughing c) AFRODITE - fracture of left medial fetlock.
