THE START OF THIS RACE WAS DELAYED DUE TO CURTISS CONDOR (S KHUMALO) PROVING RELUCTANT TO PROCEED TO THE START AND HAVING TO BE LED BY A HANDLER.
THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) GOLD FEVER (M K Katjedi) jumped inwards leaving the stalls.
b) CHIEFTAIN'S SHIELD (*N Nastili) and ENFLAME (C Maujean) jumped outwards leaving the stalls.
c) TITANS OF WAR (D Schwarz) was slow losing one length.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) PHIL THE FLUTER was selected for the taking of specimens for TCO2 testing. The first specimen revealed a level of over 36 TCO2 mmol/L. Trainer R Klaasen was advised that, in terms of the Procedure for Total Carbon Dioxide (TCO2) analysis on Raceday, a second blood specimen would be collected. Trainer R Klaasen was informed that the second blood specimen had revealed a level above the threshold of 38 mmol/L and that consequently PHIL THE FLUTER was scratched from this race in terms of the provisions of Rules 72.1.23; 4.2.14 and 4.2.18 (Withdrawn at 13H30, 9/4 in the betting). PHIL THE FLUTER was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer R Klaasen was advised (Mr L Anderson).
b) CURTISS CONDOR (S Khumalo) proved reluctant to canter to the start and had to be led. Trainer J J van Vuuren was advised that should this gelding behave in a similar manner in future, he may be suspended.
c) GOLD FEVER (M K Katjedi) over-raced in the early stages.
d) FIRE STARTER (C Murray) over-raced in the early and middle stages, and thereafter tired badly from the 150m. In view of this performance, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this colt.
e) Shortly before the finish line, CHIEFTAIN'S SHIELD (*N Nastili), which shifted out away from the crop, and TITANS OF WAR (D Schwarz), which commenced to hang in, came together and brushed.
f) TITANS OF WAR (D Schwarz), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
Assistant Trainer C Botha, acting on behalf of Trainer R R Magner, was advised (MS).
