THE STARTER REPORTED: a) FLYING PETER (D Ashby) was examined by the course Veterinary Surgeon and withdrawn, causing a delay. b) VANDALISE (X Ndlovu) reared as the start was effected and jumped slow, losing two lengths. c) IRONTAIL (JP van der Merwe) and CALLMEMRGREENLIGHT (J Gates) jumped slow, losing one length. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) After reviewing the start of this race with regard to VANDALISE (X Ndlovu) in stall gate 10, it was established that this horse had reared as the start was effected, had not been impeded in any way and no further action was taken. b) Shortly after the start, CALLMEMRGREENLIGHT (J Gates) was steadied when bumped on both sides by IRONTAIL (JP van der Merwe) and JUST FOREVER (Y Ramzan), both of which shifted ground marginally. c) COOL RUNNINGS (D Schwarz) was hanging in from the 400m. d) Leaving the 200m FIERY DUKE (M Yeni) had to be steadied away from the heels of GRADUATION TIME (C Zackey), which was hanging in and shifted in. Thereafter, leaving the 100m, GRADUATION TIME (C Zackey), which continued to hang in, had to be straightened when close to JOYOUS JUBILEE (AUS) (R Danielson). When questioned regarding this incident, Jockey C Zackey told the Stewards that GRADUATION TIME was hanging in and that his saddle had slipped sideways, making it difficult to straighten this gelding. On reviewing the patrol film, it was confirmed that the saddle on GRADUATION TIME had slipped sideways, placing Jockey C Zackey at a disadvantage. However, Jockey C Zackey was advised that the Stewards would expect him to put his crop down and use both hands to straighten his mounts in similar circumstances. e) The saddle on PERSISTANCE (E Webber) slipped back in running. This was confirmed by a Stipendiary Steward. f) FIERY DUKE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer K Mitchley was advised.
