THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) SHANTASTIC (C Zackey) was slow into stride.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) When questioned regarding his riding of SHANTASTIC, Jockey C Zackey told the Stewards that this was the second race in which he had ridden the filly, that she has a short run-in and it is preferable that she be placed close to the lead and that when asked for her effort late, she is able to sustain a strong finish. After an awkward start, he had been placed further back than anticipated and he was reluctant to improve as he was mindful that if he had directed the filly into clear running, her momentum might have been broken and this would have impacted her finishing effort. The Stewards noted Jockey C Zackey's explanation.
b) Jockey JP van der Merwe reported that HIGHLYCONFIDENTIAL did not stride out freely in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly.
c) In view of the performance of WINTER CLOUD (A Domeyer) (Betting 18/10; Distance 3.90) the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly.
d) RIPPLE EFFECT, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer GS Kotzen was advised. (WM)
e) SIDDELEY, the second-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised. (WM)
JOCKEY AND/OR EQUIPMENT CHANGES:
a) J Gates rode ONI SAN (declared 13h18 on 20240127) (Jockey A Arries stood down by the course Medical Officer. Rule 25.12 applied) The Stewards interviewed Jockey A Arries as to the circumstances regarding him being stood down due to dehydration. He advised the Stewards of the reasons surrounding this matter. The Stewards noted his explanation and advised Mr Arries that he needs to inform the Stewards of any circumstances which may lead to him being unable to fulfil his engagements as for him to be replaced on rides at such a late stage is not in his best interests or the interests of the racing industry and betting public.
b) JP van der Merwe (HIGHLYCONFIDENTIAL) rode +0.5kg (52.5kgs)
c) R Danielson (RIPPLE EFFECT) rode +0.5kg (55.7kgs)
d) L Mxothwa (ENEMY TERRITORY - IRE) rode +0.5kg (55.9kgs)
