THE STARTER REPORTED: a) VOLTE FACE (Wes Marwing) reared in the stalls. b) BATTLEOFBARBERTON (M Yeni) jumped outwards leaving the stalls. c) NKANDLA GOLD (K A Brewer) jumped awkwardly leaving the stalls. d) RASTIGNAC (J Gates) was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) GREEN GARNET (G Lerena) and NKANDLA GOLD (K A Brewer) over-raced in the early stages. b) BATTLEOFBARBERTON (M Yeni) and GAMER (D Schwarz) over-raced in the early and middle stages. c) Approaching the 1000m, GAMER (D Schwarz), which continued to over-race, was steadied to avoid running onto the heels of MASTER CHRISTMAS (K Matsunyane). d) RASTIGNAC (J Gates) raced wide and without cover around the turn and into the straight. e) BRIGHTEST BLAZE (N Klink), which raced prominently throughout, commenced to give ground to the field from the 400m. f) Leaving the 200m, GREEN GARNET (G Lerena) was steadied momentarily in anticipation of being awkwardly placed on the heels of GAMER (D Schwarz), which was carried out by ATARIME (P Mxoli), which shifted out away from the crop and was immediately corrected. g) In view of the performance of GREEN GARNET (G Lerena), (distance 8,50 lengths, betting 13/10), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. Assistant Trainer W Masawi, acting on behalf of Trainer M F de Kock, was requested to report back to the Stipendiary Board on the condition of GREEN GARNET on return to stables. h) MASTER CHRISTMAS (K Matsunyane), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer V Moore acted on behalf of Trainer M N Houdalakis was advised (LK). JOCKEY CHANGES: a) BATTLEOFBARBERTON was ridden by Jockey M Yeni (declared 30 January 2024 at 09H27).
