THE STARTER REPORTED: a) A fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) CONNOISSEUR (*K J Lihaba) proved difficult to settle in the middle stages. b) TIME TAKER (*B Plaatjies) was hanging out in the final straight. c) At the 150m PONGOLA (R A Venniker) was carried in by JAZZ FESTIVAL (R Fourie) which shifted in away from the crop and was then corrected. d) At the 100m MR MOLONY (T Godden) was steadied when racing in restricted room between MASTERBLING (*S Hlengwa) and MYSTIQUE ROUGE (N Patel), which had come to the end of its run and rolled out. e) Jockey C Zackey reported that he felt something amiss in the running with SHOEFELLA. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. f) In view of the performance of CONNOISSEUR (*K J Lihaba) (10.65 lengths, 20/1 in the betting), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. g) Trainer P B Muscutt was questioned regarding the improved performance of DOWN BY THE RIVER (S Khumalo), the winner, compared to this gelding's previous recent performances. Trainer Muscutt explained that in his opinion DOWN BY THE RIVER is better suited to the longer distance of 1600m, and further stated that the significant drop in the merit rating after its recent runs, had attributed to the improvement shown. The Board noted this explanation and advised Trainer Muscutt to race this gelding over similar distances in future. h) DOWN BY THE RIVER (S Khumalo), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer P B Muscutt advised (JN). i) SILENT TRIGGER (C Habib), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
