THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) PUBLIC BENEFIT (S Khumalo) was nervous in the stalls.
b) JOY AND PEACE (K Minnie) jumped with its head up leaving the stalls, losing two lengths.
c) MO FLOW (X Ndlovu) and PISCES (C Habib) jumped slow, losing one length.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) On arriving at the start Jockeys C Habib and L Mxothwa, the riders of PISCES and AMAZING COLOURS respectively, expressed concern with the action of their mounts while proceeding to the start . Both PISCES and AMAZING COLOURS were examined by the course Veterinary Surgeon and passed suitable to race.
b) PUBLIC BENEFIT (S Khumalo) was hanging out from the 400m.
c) Jockeys R Fourie and X Ndlovu, the riders of FAIRY KNIGHT and MO FLOW respectively, reported that these geldings did not stride out freely in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine.
d) When questioned, Jockey KA Brewer (WOMAN'S WORLD) advised the Stewards that his instructions were to take up a forward position in the early stages of the race and to allow the filly to use her natural action while adopting a strong pace in the early stages. He added that with the benefit of reviewing the patrol film with the Stewards, he was surprised by the lead that the filly had gained over the rest of the field in the middle stages of the race. Jockey KA Brewer added that after entering the home straight, he allowed the filly to relax as he felt that she had not tired and would be capable of sustaining a strong effort to the finish. He further stated that when the filly was joined by her competitors, she had managed to find extra reserves and closed the race off strongly. Jockey KA Brewer concluded that he was entirely satisfied with the tactics that he had adopted and that this filly had excelled as a result. The Stewards noted his explanation.
e) JOY AND PEACE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer AC Greeff was advised. (LM)
