THE STARTER REPORTED: a) MOUNT DARWIN (*T Mayhew) was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Leaving the 300m, STREWN SKY (R Fourie) was accidentally struck on the muzzle by Jockey C Zackey's (TOTAL SURRENDER) crop. b) In the concluding stages, when racing in close proximity, Apprentice N Nastili (BIRTHRIGHT) was accidentally struck on the shoulder by Jockey J Gates's (ROYAL EDITION) crop. c) Jockey G Lerena (ROYAL GUIDE) did not persevere with his riding from the 300m. Thereafter, Jockey G Lerena reported that this gelding took no interest in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. Trainer A G Laird was requested to report back to the Stipendiary Board on the condition of ROYAL GUIDE on return to stables. d) Jockey R Fourie reported that he felt something amiss with STREWN SKY in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. e) KING'S EXPRESS was selected for the taking of specimens for TCO2 testing. The first specimen revealed a level of over 36 TCO2 mmol/L. Trainer F P Habib was advised that, in terms of the Procedure for Total Carbon Dioxide (TCO2) analysis on Raceday, a second blood specimen would be collected. Trainer F P Habib was informed that the second blood specimen had revealed a level above the threshold of 38 mmol/L and that consequently KING'S EXPRESS was scratched from this race in terms of the provisions of Rules 72.1.23; 4.2.14 and 4.2.18 (Withdrawn at 12H38, 6/1 in the betting). KING'S EXPRESS was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer F P Habib was advised (Mr L Anderson). f) TOTAL SURRENDER (C Zackey), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer M N Houdalakis advised (MduP).
