THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) A fair start.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED :
a) Shortly after the start CAPTAIN'S CHRISTY (R A Venniker) was bumped out by CONVOCATION (B Marx - Jacobson) which jumped outwards. As a consequence of this Jockey R A Venniker (CAPTAIN'S CHRISTY) became unbalanced.
b) TARA STAR (A Mgudlwa) was bumped and squeezed out between WAR EMPRESS (C Maujean) which jumped in and LE PREMIERE (T Godden) which jumped out. As a consequence of this TARA STAR (A Mgudlwa) lost ground to the field.
c) At the 200m HOT PEARL (M Thackeray) changed stride and rolled outwards towards PATANTS HEIR (G Lerena). Thereafter in the concluding stages HOT PEARL (M Thackeray) was carried in marginally by PATANTS HEIR (G Lerena) which was hanging in. Shortly after the finish HOT PEARL (M Thackeray) and PATANTS HEIR (G Lerena) came together and brushed.
A race review was called into this incident by a member of the Stipendiary Board followed by an Objection being lodged by Trainer W Whitehead on behalf of the second placed horse HOT PEARL (M Thackeray) against the winner PATANTS HEIR (G Lerena) on the grounds of intimidation and interference in the concluding stages.
After considering the evidence presented, the Board was of view that but for the above incident, HOT PEARL (M Thackeray) would not have beaten PATANTS HEIR (G Lerena). Therefore, the Board overruled the objection and allowed the Judges' result to stand. In arriving at this decision, the Board considered that after HOT PEARL (M Thackeray) was carried in marginally, this filly headed PATANTS HEIR (G Lerena) comfortably and was of the opinion that the result had not been affected by this incident. Trainer Whitehead's deposit was refunded.
d) In view of the performance of TARA STAR (A Mgudlwa) (16.20 lengths, 8/1 in the betting), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine.
e) Apprentice B Marx-Jacobson (CONVOCATION) completed a satisfactory qualifying ride.
f) PATANTS HEIR (G Lerena), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Assistant Trainer G van Zyl (Jnr) acting on behalf of Trainer G van Zyl advised (SP).
