ASCENDING HEIGHTS was nervous in the stalls.FAIRYLAND was stubborn loading.BILLI ANN was nervous in the stalls, reared at the off and jumped awkwardly leaving the stalls.AMPLE GLORY and COSMIC LOVE were slow into stride.SALVADORA was nervous in the stalls and was slow into stride.Shortly after the start was effected, AMPLE GLORY (S Devoy) become restless in the stalls and jumped awkwardly. As a consequence of this, Jockey S Devoy lost both his irons and was unable to assist this filly throughout.FLYING COLOURS commenced to give ground to the field at the 1600m. Thereafter, Jockey G Cheyne reported that he felt something amiss with this filly in the running. The Course Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine.COIN MISTRESS (D Bogaleboile) shifted out away from the crop at the 200m.
At the 200m, ASCENDING HEIGHTS (N Juglall) which shifted out and GINA'S GIRL which rolled in marginally, came together and bumped. This caused both horses to become unbalanced for a number of strides. Thereafter, at the 100m, GINA'S GIRL was bumped out by ACSENDING HEIGHTS which shifted out. A race review was called into these incidents, which was followed by an objection being lodged by the Rider (M V'Rensburg) of the second placed horse (GINA'S GIRL) against the winner (ASCENDING HEIGHTS) on the grounds of interference from the 300m. After considering the evidence in this matter, the Board upheld the objection. In arriving at this decision, the Board considered that, with regard to the first incident, there appeared to be movement from both horses notwithstanding that, the movement from GINA'S GIRL was marginal. However, with regard to the second incident at the 100m, it appeared particularly after reviewing the side on angle that, once GINA'S GIRL had regathered its momentum, moved alongside and was about to race past ASCENDING HEIGHTS, it was bumped out. This resulted in GINA'S GIRL visibly losing momentum and falling at least a neck behind ASCENDING HEIGHTS. Despite this loss of momentum, GINA'S GIRL again regathered its momentum, finished its race off strongly and finished a diminishing head (0.10) behind ASCENDING HEIGHTS at the finish. Consequently, the Board was satisfied that, but for the above incident, GINA'S GIRL would have finished in front of ASCENDING HEIGHTS, upheld the objection and amended the judge's result to read [4,5,8,6,11]. Jockey M V'Rensburg's deposit was refunded. The winner ASCENDING HEIGHTS GINA'S GIRL was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis, Trainer G D Smith advised. The second placed horse ASCENDING HEIGHTS was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis, Trainer A C Greeff advised.FORT SILVER raced equipped with cheek pieces and blinkers off.The veterinary surgeon reported FAIRYLAND speedy cut left hind.FLYING COLOURS and ROMOUR HAS IT coughed post-race.Scratchings QUINTUS ANGEL retired.
