THE STARTER REPORTED: a) A fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) HOTARUBI (C Murray) and THUNEE PLAYA (S Moodley) came together and made contact on several occasions in the early stages. b) OTTO LUYKEN (L Mxothwa) raced wide around the turn. c) Leaving the 200m JOHNNY THE THIEF (M V'Rensburg) was carried out by NAVAJO NATION (*K J Lihaba) which hung out and shifted out. Thereafter in the concluding stages JOHNNY THE THIEF (M V'Rensburg) was steadied when awkwardly placed between MAGIC VERSE (J P v'd Merwe) and the heels of NAVAJO NATION (*K J Lihaba). d) In the concluding stages MAGIC VERSE (J P v'd Merwe) which hung in from the 300m, was steadied when awkwardly placed between JOHNNY THE THIEF (M V'Rensburg) and the heels of OTTO LUYKEN (L Mxothwa) which was hanging in from the 350m and shifted in. e) In view of the performances of HOTARUBI (C Murray) (8.45 lengths, 33/1 in the betting) and THE EQUATOR (IRE) (W Kennedy) (9.55 lengths, 4/1 in the betting), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. f) When questioned, Jockey W Kennedy (THE EQUATOR) (IRE) told the Stewards that this colt had started well and that he had obtained a forward position as he felt that this would suit the colt. He said that in the middle stages the colt had commenced to hang inwards and when asked for an effort in the home straight it had not responded as he hoped. He stated that in his opinion the colt may have needed the race after a lengthy break as it was striding out well and in his opinion there was nothing amiss with THE EQUATOR (IRE). His explanation was noted. g) OTTO LUYKEN (L Mxothwa), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer J Crawford was advised (SP). h) NAVAJO NATION (* K J Lihaba), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer W H Marwing was advised (NS). a) MAGIC VERSE (J P v'd Merwe), placed third, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer J S Snaith was advised (DZ).
