THE STARTER REPORTED: a) HAPPY HOLLY (M Yeni) and ENCHANTING CHOICE (S Khumalo) were stubborn loading. b) GIMME'S LASSIE (C Zackey) jumped slow, losing one length and thereafter was slow into stride, failed to muster speed and was ridden wide around the bend into the back straight. c) MONTELENA (C Habib) and CATCH YOUR BREATH (K Minnie) jumped slow, losing one length. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) All horses selected for TCO2 testing were within the required levels and no retests were recorded. (15h08) b) GIMME'S LASSIE (C Zackey), which jumped slow, failed to muster speed and was ridden wide around the bend into the back straight. When questioned, Jockey C Zackey (GIMME'S LASSIE) told the Stewards that from a wide draw, this mare had lost one length at the start, which suited his instructions, which were to race from off the pace as he had predicted, in consultation with the Assistant Trainer, that there would be speed in the race and it would be preferable to adopt a rearward position during the early and middle stages. He stated that the mare had lost some ground to the field after the start and he took the mare wide off the racing line to avoid the kickback from the horses racing in front of him. He added that the mare has a short run in and resents the use of the crop. With that in mind, he had allowed her to be balanced and had ridden her predominantly with the hands on the inside of the course upon straightening. He stated that he expected the field to come back to him after the fast early pace of the race and although the mare had closed off her race strongly, she was beaten by the winner on merit. His explanation was noted. c) UNCONQUERABLE LADY (S Naidoo) was hanging in from the 300m and corrected at the 100m. d) The neck strap on MONTELENA (C Habib) became detached from this filly at the 250m. e) Jockey C Little reported that SWEETIE DARLING made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly. f) Jockey M Yeni reported that HAPPY HOLLY changed stride continually in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this filly. g) ENCHANTING CHOICE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
