THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) PRINCE OF TIBET (*S Bungane) was restless in the stalls and slow into stride.
b) SUN DAZED (S Veale) and AFRICAN PRINCE (JP van der Merwe) were slow into stride.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) The All-Clear of this race was delayed while the Stewards satisfied themselves as to the correctness of the photo-finish.
b) COMMANDING (G van Niekerk) raced with an awkward head carriage in the early stages while attempting to get cover.
c) While attempting to improve into a narrow run AZZURRI (C Little), which was hanging in, made slight contact with the hindquarters of SHIFTING PATH (C Zackey) which, as a consequence, was turned inwards slightly. Simultaneously, BOUNDLESS LOVE (M Yeni) shifted out slightly which resulted in AZZURRI (C Little) having to be steadied and directed inwards to continue its run. After interviewing Jockeys C Little (AZZURRI) and C Zackey (SHIFTING PATH), the Stewards were satisfied that this was a racing incident and took no further action.
d) At the 200m SUN DAZED (S Veale), which had commenced to give ground, was steadied when close to the heels of AZZURRI (C Little), which continued to hang in and shifted in. Jockeys S Veale (SUN DAZED) and C Little (AZZURRI) were interviewed with regard to this incident. After having regard to the evidence tendered, the Stewards were satisfied that SUN DAZED (S Veale) had steadied in anticipation of the narrowing run on the inside running rail and there was some doubt regarding if sufficient clearance had been afforded to SUN DAZED (S Veale) when AZZURRI (C Little) shifted inwards. As a consequence, no further action was taken but Jockey C Little was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
In view of the performance of AZZURRI (C Little) which was hanging in, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.
e) Apprentice B Plaatjies reported that he felt something amiss with ESCARPMENT. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.
f) In view of the performances of SUN DAZED (S Veale) and MONT LOISIR (R Fourie), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine these geldings.
g) AFRICAN PRINCE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised. (SC)
