THE STARTER REPORTED: a) HERITAGE RIDGE (*V Jodhee) jumped with its head up and as a consequence, was slow into stride. b) STEADFAST (JP van der Merwe) was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) In the concluding stages Jockey S Moodley was unable to ride AFRICAN MEMOIR to the finish when close to the heels of SHIFTING PATH (*B Plaatjies). b) When questioned regarding the riding instructions given to Jockey A Fortune (BILLY COOL) Trainer MH Maingard told the Stewards that this was this gelding's first race back after suffering a bilateral epistaxis and being rested for 139 days. As such, he had told Jockey A Fortune to ride this horse with cover so as to allow the gelding to finish its race. He further told the Stewards that, in his opinion, BILLY COOL would not benefit from a strong ride and that the gelding resents the use of the crop. The Stewards accepted Trainer MH Maingard's explanation. However, he was advised that should he change the riding tactics of any of his runners, he should advise the Stewards so that they could disseminate the information. c) STEADFAST, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
