THE STARTER REPORTED:
a) JOSHUA (C Murray) was fractious in the stalls.
b) GETUPANDGO (R Fourie) was slow into stride.
THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:
a) When questioned regarding the circumstances surrounding ROCKANOLLIN (AUS) (C Orffer) taking up a position ahead of PHANTOM MAN (K Steyn) approaching the 800m, Jockey K Steyn told the Stewards that PHANTOM MAN had pulled hard in the early stages and had settled and dropped the bit shortly before this incident. He stated that had he maintained his position by riding the gelding forward, it would have picked up the bit once again and over raced. He added that this was PHANTOM MAN's first race over ground and that, in his opinion, it was beneficial to allow this gelding to dictate its own pace and be in a position to close its race off strongly. The Stewards accepted his explanation. However, Jockey K Steyn was advised in similar circumstances to ensure he maintains his position and not allow other horses to gain any preferential position, wherever possible.
b) Approaching the 200m LOMU (JP van der Merwe) was carried in marginally by JOSHUA (C Murray), which was immediately straightened.
c) Jockey R Fourie reported that GETUPANDGO made an abnormal respiratory noise in running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding.
d) In view of the performances of PHANTOM MAN (K Steyn), CITY OF PORT LOUIS (*V Jodhee), CONDITIONALLY (S Veale) and FORT IMPREZA (C Little), the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine.
e) In view of the report from the Starter regarding JOSHUA (C Murray) Trainer AE Sands will be advised to have this gelding re-schooled prior to his next engagement in terms of Rule 61.6.10.
f) COCO'S HERO, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer J Crawford was advised. (ZM)
