The start of this Race was delayed due to the delay in the previous Race and the 30 minute interval between Races. SEVENTH SONG flyjumped leaving the stalls and lost two lengths. THE SARACEN was restless in the stalls and slow into stride. JUST ON BROADWAY was restless in the stalls. VALLIANT KNIGHT was slow into stride. MATCHLESS CAPTAIN was hanging in from the 600m, proving difficult to assist. Jockey de Melo reported that FREEZING FAST took no interest in the running. Apprentice Pieterse reported that VALLIANT KNIGHT made an abnormal respiratory noise in the running. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. Assistant Trainer Muscutt acting on behalf of Trainer Crawford appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding the improved performance of MATCHLESS CAPTAIN compared to this gelding's previous performance on the 12 February 2020. Assistant Trainer P Muscutt explained that in MATCHLESS CAPTAIN's last run, this gelding had committed from a deep draw to lead on the poly track. However, MATCHLESS CAPTAIN is a difficult horse with a sensitive mouth and in its last start, it took a hold of the bit, went too fast early and compounded in the straight. It was Mr Muscutt's opinion that racing down the straight on the grass and over the shorter distance today, accounted for this gelding's significantly improved performance. The Board noted the explanation of Trainer Muscutt which was corroborated by the patrol films of the race and the form of MATCHLESS CAPTAIN. MATCHLESS CAPTAIN was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. THE SARACEN raced with alumites in front, unshod behind. MATCHLESS CAPTAIN raced with a tongue tie. Vet: FREEZING FAST - nothing obvious detected. VALLIANT KNIGHT - abnormal respiratory noise and not striding out right hind.
