HIGHWAY ROBBER was slow, losing one length. BYE BYE BLACK BIRD was slow into stride. Trainer Stewart was questioned regarding the improved performance from VARISTAR today, compared to its previous race on 28/12/2013, at Kenilworth over 1200m, when the gelding finished 10.45 lengths behind the winner after it compounded badly in the final 400m, Trainer Stewart told the Stewards that it was established after its race that it had been suffering from ulcers, which in his opinion explained why the gelding had given ground in its previous race. He said he had started treating VARISTAR with ulcer medication and in today's race the gelding had run on strongly until the finish. The Board noted his explanation and his attention was drawn to the Rules pertaining to inconsistent form and the future performances of VARISTAR will be monitored. In view of the performance from JUDAH THE PRINCE, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine the gelding and submit a report. Jockey Winnaar reported that HIGHWAY ROBBER changed stride continually in running. The saddle on VARISTAR slipped back badly shortly after the start. Jockey du Plooy was charged with a contravention, read with Guideline C, Appendix L, in that he misused his crop by hitting EPICENTRE more than three times on consecutive strides in the concluding stages. Jockey du Plooy signed an Admission of Guilt and was fined. VARISTAR and EPICENTRE were selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Vet: JUDAH THE PRINCE and HIGHWAY ROBBER - inspected post race and no obvious abnormalities were detected. Scratched: MUSKETS 'N ROSES - swollen legs.
