Trainer J V A Strydom signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 8.3.1 in that he did not have available the registered colours of the owner/s of the horse WEST HEAD. A penalty of a warning was imposed. Shortly after the start, INTERSTATE had to ease when awkwardly placed between SHADES OF BLU and FORBIDDEN AFFAIR which was carried out by BENGAL CRIMSON which rolled out slightly. Jockey T Gould (FORBIDDEN AFFAIR) reported that this gelding tired quickly from the 200m. The Course Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. After being presented in the parade ring unshod the Course Farrier had to fit the front alumite shoes to TERRA CREEK GIRL prior to the filly proceeding to the start. Trainer J P Nel signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 10.5.8 (read with Local Condition 5.8.4) in that he presented the horse TERRA CREEK GIRL to race incorrectly shod. A penalty of a R1500 fine was imposed. When questioned regarding the performance of SHADES OF BLU (M Byleveld), Trainer D A McKenzie told the Stewards that while he was disappointed with today's performance, in his opinion this gelding is better suited to racing around a turn and over a slightly longer distance. The Stewards noted this explanaition and advised Trainer D A McKenzie to report back on the condition of this gelding on its return to the stables. The winner BLUE DUCHESS was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis, Trainer G D Smith advised (LM). The second placed horse INTERSTATE was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis, Trainer D A McKenzie advised.
